Romania Skiing Holidays
Romania is establishing itself as a popular cheap ski holiday destination, along with its’ Eastern European neighbours, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Serbia. Skiers are treated to wide open beginner-friendly slopes, solid lift systems, reputable ski schools and a good choice of entertainment, all for much less than any of their Western counterparts, whilst experiencing a vastly different culture. Romania is a mystical country, full of fascinating folklore, wonderful gothic architecture and incredibly warm, hospitable people. The countryside is a mixture of rolling hills and flat plains, beautiful rivers and lakes, and majestic mountains – indeed one-third of the entire country is covered by the Carpathian Mountains, known as the Transylvanian Alps.

Skiing in Romania - The Resorts
Romanias’ climate is similar to that of the northeastern United States, mainly temperate, with cold winters and the major snowfall occurring between December and March. Ski areas in Romania include Predeal, the highest resort in the country at 1,100m, found in the Bugeci Mountains close to the major tourist attraction Peles Castle, which is set in an area of incredible natural scenic beauty and Sinai, known as the “Carpathian Pearl”. Sinai is the oldest resort in Romania, a charming place with facilities including 2 cable-cars taking skiers to a height of 2,000m, and offering the best après-ski in the country. By far the most popular resort, at least with international visitors, is Poiana-Brasov, within the Carpathian Mountains. This purpose-built resort, with its’ extensive beginners slopes, excellent ski school and traditional bars and restaurants, is one of the most popular up-and-coming budget destinations around. There are 14 marked trails in Poiana-Brasov, served by a combination of 11 lifts, including a gondola and 3 cable-cars, and the skiing reaches a height of 1,800m. Beginners have some well-maintained flood-lit nursery slopes on which to practice, and a choice of easy wide blues at the top of the mountain. Primarily a beginners resort, intermediate skiers can pick up the pace and perfect their technique on the red runs, whilst advanced skiers have just a couple of runs to challenge them. The ski lessons in Poiana-Brasov are considerably cheaper than elsewhere in Europe, so all abilities could take advantage of the reasonable tuition.
Skiing in Romania - The Après-ski
The resorts of Romania all have traditional bars and restaurants to offer visitors a slice of the local culture. Folk evenings and gypsy music and dancing are found in all the resorts, and most hotels offer entertainment for their guests. The restaurants in the Romanian mountains offer locally grown and reared produce, with the emphasis on meats, cheese and cream, with Poiana-Brasov, in particular, being home to some of the best restaurants in the country. Visitors to the ski resorts of Romania have access to some interesting excursions, including the medieval Saxon town of Brasov, a trip to Draculas’ castle, Bran, in Transylvania, and the many mountains spa towns, with thermal hot springs known for their wonderful healing and regenerating properties.
