Skiing in Niederau
Niederau is a great destination for families and beginners, offering good value for money and plenty of easy slopes in a beautiful unspoilt Alpine setting. The resort is perched at the edge of the Kitzbuhel Alps, in the Wildschonau ( “wildly beautiful”) Valley, linked to its’ neighbouring villages, Oberau, Auffach, and Thierbach, by free bus service. The skiing here is very established, with the first lifts operating in 1947, and English is widely spoken, both in the ski schools, which have an excellent reputation, and throughout this welcoming village in general.

Skiing in Niederau – The Slopes
Niederau and the other smaller resorts of the valley are all accessible on one lift pass so there really is something for everyone within the combined 65 km of piste. The largest of the four with the widest variety of terrain, Niederau is situated at a height of 830m with over 40km served by 10 lifts. Novices will enjoy learning on the extensive nursery slopes right in the centre of the village and, once more confident, can take the 8 person gondola up to the summit of the Markbachjoch Mountain, at 1500m, to test themselves on the gentle blue runs. Intermediate level skiers are well served from this point with a selection of reds to choose from to lead them back down into the village. Another choice is to venture up through the woods of the Schatzberg Mountain in Auffach, at a higher elevation of 1900m, with an area of above tree-line skiing and bigger vertical drops. There are 3 black runs in Niederau to tempt the more advanced skiers, one with a vertical drop of 700m through moguls, and plenty of off-piste for the truly adventurous. If you need a wider selection of runs and resorts, why not purchase the Kitzbuheler Alpen Pass, which gives you access to 700km more skiing throughout the area. Snow cannons on 50% of the slopes in Niederau ensure decent conditions throughout the season, which runs from December to April. Snowboarders will find a terrain park and a half-pipe in Auffach.

Skiing in Niederau – The Village
Niederau village offers relaxed and traditional apres-ski – mostly centred around local inns, pubs, and cafes, with some venues offering weekly live music and entertainment. Tyrolean evenings are often held throughout the village, and the Ski School throws a fun weekly party. Moonlight tobogganing parties and fondue nights are favourites, and no apres-ski fun is complete without sampling the local gluhwein and schnapps. Other things to try in Niederau are bowling, ice-skating, curling and even paragliding.
