Mayrhofen skiing holidays

Skiing in Mayrhofen
Mayrhofen, located at 630m in the depths of the beautiful Ziller Valley, is the largest resort in the valley and one of the top ski areas to be found in Austria, always a favourite with British visitors. Mayrhofen has retained its’ charm, beauty and authentic Tyrolean character, despite its’ continued popularity as a modern, fully equipped resort, with state of the art lifts, and an appealing lively après-ski scene in a huge area full of fantastic skiing.

Skiing In Mayrhofen – The Mountains
Although Mayrhofen is a fairly low lying resort, its’ slopes are not. An efficient bus service ferries skiers to and from the high speed lifts, which then transport 60,000 passengers up to the peaks of Mayrhofen at 2500m. Mayrhofen has 2 main ski areas, Penken and Ahorn, the latter being a haven for beginners, with high, yet gentle nursery slopes, some great blue runs leading directly back into the village and a choice of 4 ski schools, with plenty of English instruction. Children will have fun in the “Kinderland” playground. Despite its’ wealth of easy slopes, the Ahorn is home to a couple of not to be missed runs – the steepest run in the country on the Harakiri, and the longest downhill in the valley, the 5.5km Ebenbald slalom trail. The Penken is the main ski area for Mayrhofen and here you’ll find plenty of wide open tree lined reds, perfect for cruising. The Penken is the gateway to the Zillertal 3000, with the lifts linking Mayrhofen to the neighbouring areas of Finkenberg, Rastkogel, Horberg and Eggalm – incorporating 40km of blue, 86km red and 20km of black runs. The Zillertal Super Ski Pass opens up the ski area of the valley even further, creating a massive 500km of skiable terrain, including the glacier at Hintertux, with year round skiing at a great altitude of 3250m. A huge new snowboarding fun park has recently been added to the list of Mayrhofens’attractions, and more modern snowmaking facilities ensure that all the slopes are fully covered throughout the season.

Skiing in Mayrhofen – The Apres-ski
Mayrhofen is a party lovers’ delight. The resort comes alive when the lifts close with the slope side bars filling up and the village buzzing with life. There are numerous bars to choose from – favourites providing particularly rowdy entertainment and drinking being The Ice Bar, Nikkis’ Schirmbar and the Scotland Yard (a snowboarding haunt). The resort offers plenty of good local Tyrolean food in the mountain huts and village restaurants, and Mayrhofen is home to some traditional Austrian bakeries and cafes. As well as up to date music in the bars and clubs, you can enjoy lots of authentic sounds too, such as the many oompah bands and popular polka music. Whilst in Mayrhofen, there is a multitude of other activities to enjoy – from the aqua centre with its fun pool, bowling, indoor tennis and squash, to sleigh rides, ice skating and tobogganing.
