2010 Olympics Skiing

Skiing at 2010 Winter Olympics
Skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics promises an exciting array of events, from the exhilarating thrill of downhill racing to the balletic grace of ski jumping events. Scheduled to take place in Vancouver in Canada, skiing at the 2010 WInter Olympic Games will offer events in the alpine, freestyle, snowboarding and nordic categories. Although the host city is Vancouver, skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games will take place on Whistler Mountain, the largest ski area in North America.

Skiing at 2010 Winter Olympics - Plenty of excitement and anticipation in Vancouver, B.C
The alpine skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics will feature 10 events, five each for both men and women, and include downhill, Super-G, slalom, giant slalom and combined. The rules for skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics are the same for both men and women, although the courses are different, with skiers having to navigate a sheer vertical drop, plus get round a number of gates, in the fastest time. Downhill skiing features the longest course and the fastest speeds, whereas slalom is the most technical with the quickest course, requiring lightening speed turns. Giant Slalom (or GS) is quite similar, but with fewer, wider turns, Super-G comprises the speed of downhill with the precision of giant slalom, and the combined event consists of one downhill and two slalom runs.

Skiing at 2010 Winter Olympics - Enjoy the thrill of the downhill at Whistler
Visitors to the resort can try their hand at skiing at the 2010 WInter Olympics by sampling a couple of the runs that will be featured in the Games. The downhill skiing in the 2010 Winter Olympics will take place on the 'Dave Murray Downhill', an extremely long and very fast run, which takes its name after a Canadian former racer, with the womens' downhill following 'Franz's Run', named after the founder of the resort - one of the steepest womens' downhills in the world. Whereas the nordic events also to be held at Whistler, the snowboarding and freestyle skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics will be taking place on Cypress Mountain, one of the most popular areas for cross-country skiing. Spectators can enjoy a variety of moguls, aerials and jumps, all scored for a combination of air, form and landing.
