Gressoney Skiing Holidays
The ski resort of Gressoney, located in the Gressoney Valley in the Italian Alps, is set in a traditional mountain village and forms part of one of the largest ski areas in the world, the Monte Rosa. The area covers skiing over three valleys, Gressoney, Ayas, and Valsesia, and offers 180km of pistes, with a spectacular backdrop of the Mont Rosa Glacier, the second highest mountain in Europe. Gressoney is comprised of three regions, the original town St Jean, at a height of 1,385m, where most of the facilities are located, La Trinite, at 1,600m, with good links to the slopes and Stafal, a purpose built base just above La Trinite and the main access point to the Monte Rosa circuit.
Skiing in Gressoney – The Mountains
There are 74km of slopes in Gressoney alone, consisting mainly of intermediate runs, and the area is characterised by wide open well-groomed runs, perfect for cruising. A series of 8 lifts, including 2 gondolas, transport skiers up to the peak elevation of 2,970m, with 18 lifts ferrying passengers over to the neighbouring valleys. Access to the giant Monte Rosa ski area is easy from Gressoneys’ central valley position, and the main links are from Stafal at the head of the valley. From here, skiers can access the slopes of Champoluc and Alagna in the lateral valleys, and enjoy 180km of pistes served by an extensive updated lift system. Champoluc also offers enjoyable well-groomed intermediate runs, whilst Alagna is a real experts’ domaine. The mountain is full of challenging black runs, exhilarating off-piste and a vertical of 2,000m. Both Gressoney and Champoluc offer nursery areas, but not a huge selection of slopes for progressing beginners. Monte Rosa offers excellent snow conditions, with over 70km of terrain covered by 400 snow cannons. The area is covered a number of different lift passes, including the Aosta Valley Pass, giving access to 12 ski resorts, such as Cervinia, Zermatt, Pila, La Thuile and Courmeyer.
Skiing in Gressoney – The Village
Gressoney is an authentic mountain village, rich in history and culture. The locals are of Germanic descent, known as Walser, and have their own culture, traditions, and dialect, all of which are reflected throughout the village. The cobbled streets are home to authentic chalets, built in the local architectural style, and the atmosphere is one of unspoilt old-fashioned charm. As one would expect, the après-ski in Gressoney is quiet and low-key, with a few bars and restaurants offering local specialities. Other activities to try whilst skiing in Gressoney include ice-skating, snow-shoeing, swimming, saunas and enjoying the scenic walks of the area.
