Skiing in Kirchberg Kirchberg is situated in the midst of the Kitzbuhel Alps in Austria, only 6 kms from its’ more famous neighbour, Kitzbuhel. Whilst Kitzbuhel has a reputation of being a glamorous, cosmopolitan resort with a price tag to match, the smaller village of Kirchberg is more down to earth and lacking in pretension, and offers much better value for money, the same fun filled atmosphere and, most importantly, the same slopes. It is a pretty, medieval town, with a dominant 14th century church (indeed the village takes its’ name from the German word for church – “kirch”) and is small enough that all the amenities are within walking distance. Kirchberg attracts both families and younger groups of skiers, especially the Dutch and Germans, who come to revel in the pace of both the skiing and the nightlife.
Skiing in Kirchberg – The Slopes Skiing in Kirchberg is concentrated in three main areas – the Kitzbuhel Horn, Hahnenkamm, and Jochberg-Pass Thun – all of which combine to form part of the largest linked ski area in the country. The skiing in Kirchberg itself is based around the Gaisberg Mountain, at a height of 860m, the site of three ski schools, and together with its’ new quad chair and gentle nursery slopes, it’s a great place for beginners. More advanced skiers will want to head straight to Kitzbuhel, and explore either the Kitzbuhel Horn or the Hahnenkamm – each offering endless possibilities with long runs of untracked trails, steep slopes and mogul fields. Try the Ski Safari – an all day adventure covering a continuous trail of over 35km dropping down to Pass-Thun. The truly adventurous should not leave without trying to navigate the most difficult downhill run in the world – the famous Streif on the Hahnenkamm, which plays host to the annual race of the same name – and it’s possible to ski the World Cup racing course, or the more forgiving family route. Snowboarders are well catered for here with a Fun Park which includes both a quarter pipe and a half pipe, a pro jump and a slalom sprint course.
Skiing in Kirchberg – The Apres-Ski Whilst skiing in Kirchberg, there are a huge number of apres-ski venues to choose from – some in particular getting fairly wild when the lifts close – and the village is bustling after a days’ activity on the slopes. There are some famous watering holes to frequent - try the famous London Pub or the Boomerang if it’s dancing on the tables you’re after- and there’s a great choice of restaurants, offering an extensive choice of dining options from traditional Tyrolean to haute cuisine. A night out in Kitzbuhel is only a few minutes away for those wanting to experience a little more glitz – try your luck at the late night casino. Other activities to try whilst skiing in Kirchberg are night skiing or tobogganing, winter hiking, sleigh rides, an indoor pool, tennis or bowling.
