Zell am See Snow Conditions

Snow Conditions in Zell am See - Low-lying sunny resort, close to glacier
The resort of Zell am See lies in the Prinzgau Valley in the Alps of western Austria, just 70km from Salzburg. The town is a year-round destination for visitors, and there's excellent skiing here, particularly for intermediates and beginners. Zell am See's winter ski season runs from December to April, and the average snowfall in the resort is around 284cm.

Zell am See Snow Conditions - Best suited to beginner and intermediates
Although the resort sits at a relatively low elevation, 757m, the lift system takes skiers up to 2,000m within the local slopes, and to over 3,000m in the neighbouring resort of Kaprun. These fairly low slopes are generally sunny, and proximity to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier means that when the snow isn't great at Zell am See, conditions should be better at Kaprun, which has a more reliable snow record. The two resorts are covered on the Europa Sport lift pass, and together, they offer 138km of skiable terrain, with something for all levels. Zell am See's main ski area is on the Schmittenhohe, and there's an excellent range of runs, from short steeps to wide gentle slopes and a host of scenic tree-lined descents, as well as a vertical of 1,200m. More competent skiers should head to Kaprun, where the glacial slopes offer year-round skiing, and there's the chance for off-piste in Zell am See, with the aid of a mountain guide.

Snow Conditions in Zell am See - Snowmaking on over half its slopes
Zell am See has snowmaking on 65% of its slopes, which help to maintain optimum conditions on the fairly low sunny slopes. Upper slope averages reached 258cm in March 2009, with January and February seeing 144cm - 184cm.
