Skiing in Zell am See
The medieval town of Zell am See dates back to the 8th century, and sits on the edge of the picturesque Lake Zell, surrounded by over 30 towering mountain peaks, including Austrias’ highest peak, Mount Glossglockner. Together with the glacial ski resort of Kaprun, the resort makes up the highly popular year round ski area known as Europa Sport Region, offering 130km of pistes served by 62 lifts. The skiing in Zell am See is mostly suited to intermediates, looking for varied and extensive skiing opportunities in a reasonably priced, snow-sure resort.

Skiing in Zell am See – The Mountains
The Europa Sport Region is comprised of three main ski areas – the local Kaprun area, the glacier Kitzsteinhorn, and the mountain behind the town of Zell am See, the Schmittenhohe. All the areas are covered on one lift pass and all can be easily reached by ski bus. With over half the runs marked as easy, beginners should start off at the local area in Kaprun, the Maiskogel, with lots of gentle blues through the woods and drag lifts. Intermediates are best served on the glacier, with plenty of red runs throughout its’ wide open bowl terrain, and 20 lifts taking skiers around the slopes and up to the peak at 3,029m. Skiing is available on the glacier all year round. The tree-lined slopes of Zell am See offer the most diverse skiing in the Europa, with all levels catered for on the sunny Schmittenhohe Mountain. There are over 50km of blues and reds here in Zell am See, including a 6km trail, the Schutt, which includes a 1,200m vertical back down to the village. The Zell am See area is the only place in the Europa Sport Region with black runs and off-piste skiing, making it the most suitable for expert and advanced skiers. The snowboarding facilities are excellent in Zell am See, with two fun parks, two half-pipes and one of the only two boarder-cross courses in Austria found here in the Europa region.

Skiing in Zell am See – The Après-ski
Zell am See is a bustling town with its’ pedestrianised medieval streets full of shops, gasthauses and restaurants. With over 30 pubs and bars to choose from and 90 restaurants, there is plenty to offer both the locals, who number almost 10,000, and the tourists alike. Favourite après-ski haunts include the Sportstuberl and the Jagawirt, and for late night fun the Villa Crazy Daisy is always popular. International cuisine is available throughout the resort, such as Chinese, Mexican, and Italian, with authentic Austrian food found everywhere. Other activities to enjoy whilst staying in Zell am See include tobogganing, snow-shoeing, ice-climbing, ice-skating, sleigh-rides and the nearby fitness centre in Kaprun. Day trips to Salzburg and the thermal springs in the Gastein Valley are also highly recommended from Zell am See.
