Verbier, located close to the town of Martigny in southwestern Switzerland, is one of the worlds’ best loved ski and snowboard resorts, with extensive expert terrain, a vibrant après-ski scene and some magnificent scenery. Skiing in Verbier – The Mountains
Part of the Four Valleys region, Verbier has links to its’ neighbours Thyon, Veysonnaz and Nendaz, and together they offer a colossal 410km of skiing. Verbier itself sits at 1,500m and offers 120km of trails, with 70 slopes. A constantly improving system of 38 lifts ferries skiers around the resort, including the Jumbo cable-car which can carry 150 people at a time and the innovative new Funi-space gondola, and up to the peak elevation at 3,300m.
The resort is home to one of the biggest verticals in the world, a 2,500m drop over 15km, and the area is characterised by its’ steep descents. Although the resort is ideally suited to more experienced skiers, there are some easy gentle trails. The 27 sunny beginner slopes can be found at village level, and Verbier offers a choice of 4 ski schools. Intermediate skiers will find almost half the terrain in Verbier allocated to them and from the hub of Les Ruinettes at 2,740m, there is good choice of blues, with the runs being well-groomed and above the tree-line. Verbier is well-known for its’ expert terrain, notably the Mont Gele glacier and the huge moguls of the Tortin snow bowl, and the entire area is a mecca for those who prefer the challenge of off-piste skiing. The possibilities are endless but a guide is highly recommended. Verbier is a hugely popular resort for more experienced snowboarders, with the best terrain up on the slopes of Mont Fort and Mont Gele, and the resort if home to a giant terrain park.
Skiing in Verbier – The Après-ski
Verbier is known for its’ vibrant, sophisticated nightlife and offers the best après-ski in the Swiss Alps. After a hard day on the slopes, many people stop by the crowded Mont Fort pub for a well-deserved drink, and there is a wide selection of lively bars in town, including Le Fer a Cheval, Big Ben and The Nelson. Verbier is famous for its’ extensive dining scene, and the resort is home to 60 restaurants serving both traditional Swiss specialities such as fondue and rosti, and a wide range of other international fare. The nightlife in Verbier is legendary, and the choice of party venues is huge, offering everything from happy hours and theme nights, to sophisticated clubs and lounges. Whilst skiing in Verbier, there is a wide range of off-the-slope activities, including tobogganing, snow-shoeing, ice-skating, curling, horse-riding, hiking and swimming.
