Recreation
The resort is small, unpretentious, and easy to get around, featuring a combination of traditional villages and modern facilities, seen in the authentic timber-clad chalets and concrete buildings. Made up of four villages, the original and largest is Les Claux, home to most of the facilities, including two arcades with a range of basic shops selling essentials.
Trips and excursions from Vars include the linked village of Risoul, an attractive town with fantastic views, or slightly further afield, the historic town of Briancon, with its charming old medieval quarter.
Dining
The region offers plenty of choice with reasonable prices, and there are some excellent mountain restaurants in the Foret Blanche area. Most of the cuisine is traditional French, with plenty of home cooking and local specialities such as fondu.
Après-ski
There are some fairly lively bars in Vars, with some located in the hotels, but in general the après-ski scene is relatively quiet, livening up during the weekends. Some bars offer live music, and there is a choice of after-hours discos. Prices tend to be more reasonable than in other French ski resorts.
