Snow Conditions in Vars
Located near the Italian border, Vars is the largest resort in the French Southern Alps, and is best-known for its abundant sunshine and excellent snow record. Together with Risoul, the resort makes up the large ski circuit, La Foret Blanche, which comprises 180km of varied pistes to suit all levels. At a height of 1,850m, the resort offers high-altitude skiing which takes place mainly around 2,500m, with its top elevation at 2,750m. The ski season in Vars is a long one, beginning in December and carrying on through April or early May.
Vars Snow Conditions - Wonderful sunny conditions, un-crowded slopes
The most southerly resort in the area, skiing in Vars will boast 300 sunny days a year, with the sun shining sometimes up to 12 hours a day, creating very enjoyable skiing conditions. The slopes face in north, east and westerly directions, helping to retain the resorts' snowbase, and are designed mainly for intermediate skiers, with plenty of runs above and below the tree-line. Powder conditions are good at the top, and there are off-piste gullies for the more adventurous, and some tough blacks. Beginners will enjoy learning on the wide sunny nursery slopes, which always see plenty of snow, and in general the resort remains pleasantly un-crowded throughout the season.
Snow Conditions In Vars - High-altitude resort, with long season and excellent record
The resort and the Foret Blanche ski circuit in general, has an impressive snow record, seeing an average snowfall of 889cm each year. Vars has seen excellent winter conditions in recent years, with top slope averages reaching 281cm, back in 2004 and February and March seeing the most snow, with 2006 highs reaching 172cm. As well as the abundant snowfall, the resort is supplemented by extensive snowmaking facilities, with the 15 snow cannons generally only used at the end of the season.
