Val Thorens Snow Conditions - Highest resort in Europe, part of Trois Vallees
The highest resort in Europe, Val Thorens boasts a massive average snowfall of 900cm each year, creating exceptional conditions for skiing and snowboarding during the winter. Located in the Savoie area of the French Alps, Val Thorens sits at an altitude of 2,300m in a wide snowy bowl, and lies close to the Peclet Glacier. With skiing easily accessible from anywhere in the resort, Val Thorens also offers entry to the massive Trois Vallees, the largest lift-linked in the world with 600km of terrain, all conveniently covered on one lift pass.

Snow Conditions In Val Thorens - Extremely snow-sure and reliable French resort
With almost 100% of its slopes located above 2,000m, skiing is guaranteed throughout the long season, which runs from early December to late April, sometimes even into May. The resort actually offers a 'snow guarantee' - which claims that at least 70% of its slopes will be open for 4 months, one year in advance (conditions apply - see www.valthorens.com for details). The slopes of Val Thorens are north-facing, however the resort itself faces south, meaning skiers can enjoy the sunshine at lunchtime or the end of the day, as well as knowing that conditions on the pistes will be consistent. Skiing in Val Thorens is generally in the wide open bowl above the tree-line, perfect for intermediate or advanced skiers looking for guaranteed snow in the open powder fields, drops and chutes, and confident navigating a fairly bleak landscape with extremely low temperatures. Beginners are served by specific areas around the village, however, featuring some gentle greens and long blues leading down to Les Menuires which are accessible from anywhere in the resort, and an abundance of convenient ski-in/ski-out accommodation.

Val Thorens Snow Conditions - Deep powder, and added snowmaking on the lower slopes
Upper slope averages for Val Thorens reached 188cm in 2007, with previous years seeing as much as 275cm. Despite its reliability, the resort has still continued to invest in snowmaking facilities to further enhance the skiing experience, and counteract the effects of the strong spring sunshine on the slopes, with over 500 snow cannons supplementing the resort.
