The resort of Sunday River is located in Newry, Maine and is one of the states' two major ski areas. Despite its low altitude, the area receives almost 400cm of snowfall each year, and enjoys a long ski season running from early November to early May. Sunday River boasts reliable conditions, due both to the natural snowfall and its extensive snowmaking facilities, the largest in the US.
Snow Conditions In Sunday River - Wide range of skiing on 8 mountains
The ski area stretches over 5km from east to west, and encompasses 8 inter-connected mountains, with 77km of skiable terrain. The resorts' 128 runs are served by a series of 18 lifts, and there are slopes to suit all level of skiers, with skiing beginners and skiing intermediates best served. Trails range from wide open runs and narrow gladed trails, to steep drops, bumps and moguls. North Peak is the ideal area for families, with plenty of green and blue runs, with Jordan Bowl boasting all-round terrain and the best scenery. Experts should head for White Cap for the most challenging runs on the mountain.

The slopes of Sunday River are known to be completely reliable, as the resort has invested heavily in the largest snowmaking operation in the country, with a series of more than 1,750 snow guns covering 92% of the slopes. The resort is seen as a leader in snowgun technology and was the first to use computers to control snow quality. Sunday River sees an annual snowfall of 393cm each year, with upper slope averages in 2007 reaching 124cm, and the resort seeing highs of 228cm in previous years.
