Summer Skiing Holidays - Pleasant sunny conditions, try seasonal après-ski activities
Summer skiing holidays take place in resorts where there are high-altitude glaciers to ensure year-round snow conditions. Some of Europe’s' best-loved and highly-regarded ski resorts are open for summer skiing, with their glacial peaks maintaining great snow throughout the year. Resorts to consider for a summer skiing holiday include Tignes, Val d'Isere, Val Thoren and Les Deux Alpes in France, Saas-Fee, Zermatt and Les Diablerets in Switzerland, Kaprun, Stubai and Solden in Austria and Breuil-Cervinia and Passo Tonale in Italy. Glacial runs tend to not be that steep, so expert skills are not essential on a summer skiing holiday, and the range of runs can be limited, suiting beginners and intermediates. Summer skiing on glaciers feature well groomed clear runs, ideal for experienced skiers to perfect technique and test their speed, and attract professionals and top level skiers who choose this time to train. A summer skiing holiday also offers plenty of mild weather activities to enjoy after the slopes, such as walking, hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, canyoning, white-water rafting, fishing and golf.
Summer Skiing Holidays - Make an early start, enjoy un-crowded slopes
With mild, and even warm temperatures, the snow does deteriorate faster than in the colder winter season, so on a summer skiing holiday it is advisable to make an early start to the day and take advantage of the hard snow before it starts to melt. Some summer ski resorts open earlier than in the winter, with their succession of lifts starting up as early as 7am, to ensure skiers reach the top of the glacier in good time. The day also finishes sooner during the summer skiing season, with the lifts closing earlier than usual due to the possibility of wet slushy conditions as the day progresses. Skiers should dress accordingly on a summer skiing holiday, choosing layers of light clothing, as conditions can change suddenly, with mild weather turning hot close to midday, or cooling down suddenly at the end of the day. A summer skiing holiday means plenty of sun tan lotion and, of course, sunglasses, to protect eyes from the glare of the sun at altitude and the snows' reflection. Although the majority of our ski operators do not offer summer ski holidays, a number of them do have summer skiing nearby.
