Saint Martin de Belleville is a traditional French mountain village just 8km from Les Menuires, often referred to as the ‘Jewel of the Trois Vallees’, due to its’ charming rustic nature. Rich in history and full of character, the old barns and houses of Saint Martin de Belleville now serve as accommodation for skiers who wish to explore the extensive area of the Trois Vallees, but enjoy the peace and tranquility of a quaint French village.
Skiing in Saint Martin de Belleville – The Mountains
At an altitude of 1,450m and ideally placed in the Belleville Valley, Saint Martin de Belleville shares the vast domaine of the valley with its’ neighbours, Val Thorens and Les Menuires. Recent investment and development in the lift system has made links to the extensive ski area of the Trois Vallees quick and easy. The largest linked area in the world, offering a staggering 600km of pistes, and incorporating 328 runs, is now directly accessible from the village of Saint Martin de Belleville, with the recent addition of the new lifts, the Saint Martin cable car and chair lift. From the village, these 2 lifts ferry passengers up to the upper slopes and the peak of La Tougnette, at 2,430m, from where there are 3 options. Skiers can travel down to Les Menuires, and from there access the high-altitude slopes of Val Thorens, or cross the Tougnette ridge and enjoy the slopes of Meribel, or lastly ski down through the forests back towards Saint Martin de Belleville. The route back through the scenic woodlands offer some fantastic runs, perfect for cruising, and the area is popular with cross-country skiers, boasting 28km of trails.

The village of Saint Martin de Belleville offers a low cost alternative to the more expensive resorts of the Trois Vallees, with a mixture of old and new ski-in/ski-out accommodations, including chalets and hotels built in the local Savoyard style. The village is centred around the Baroque church, and still retains its’ farming roots, with the character of Saint Martin de Belleville remaining untouched despite an increased surge in popularity. Nightlife is relaxed and peaceful, with a few bars, including Brewski’s and Le Jokker, and the village is home to some good authentic French restaurants. Other activities to try whilst skiing in Saint Martin de Belleville include snow-shoeing and dog-sledding, and the Sports Centre of Val Thorens, with its’ vast array of indoor activities, is a short trip away.
