Skiing in St. Wolfgang St Wolfgang is a beautifully picturesque town in the Saltzkammergut Austrian Lake District – an area make famous by “The Sound of Music”. Perched on the edge of Lake Wolfgangsee, its’ romantic setting and rich cultural history make it a great destination for both skiers and non-skiers, as St Wolfgang has plenty to offer all year long. There are stunning views pretty much throughout the whole town. In the summer it is a hiking paradise and also attracts culture buffs, either touring the impressive 15th century Gothic church or soaking up the atmosphere which has so inspired great pieces of music and operetta.
Skiing in St. Wolfgang - The Mountains The resort of St. Wolfgang is a great resort for both skiers and snowboarders to learn to ski in. At a height of 540m, the town only offers nursery slopes, with the actual ski area of St. Wolfgang, the Posthalm, being a beautifully scenic 35min bus ride away. With a top elevation here of up to 1900m, the snow is much more reliable throughout the season, which spans from December to April. Whilst skiing at Posthalm, with 18 slopes including 6 blue and 12 red covering 17 km, both novices and intermediates can practice their technique throughout the area, which has recently installed a modern quad lift to supplement the 9 existing drag lifts. For more challenging skiing, travel a further 15 minutes to Gosau, with 50 more kilometers of pistes, or try the Dachstein West area pass, for skiing at an altitude of above 2000m and an additional 140km. With 60km trails, there’s plenty of cross-country skiing to enjoy.
Skiing in St. Wolfgang – The Village The cobbled streets of St. Wolfgang offer a good choice of cafes, bars and traditional local restaurants. The accommodation varies from quaint family run inns and chalets to sophisticated 3 and 4 star hotels with numerous amenities. A famous landmark is the White Horse Inn, a grand looking hotel overlooking the lake – try the Sunday champagne brunch here – the setting for the famous operetta by Benatsky of the same name. Other activities available here include ice skating on the lake, curling, hiking the cleared paths, and snowshoeing. St. Wolfgang is perfectly situated for day trips – travel to Salzburg to see Mozarts’ birthplace or the historic castle, or try the thermal baths in the spa town of Bad Ischl.
