Skiing in St Johann St. Johann is a great family destination, offering plenty of choice for the first-time skier in a traditional Tyrolean mountain resort. The resort, situated between the Kitzbuhel Horn and the Wilderkaiser Mountains, is an authentic market town with a population of almost 8,000, and along with the stunning alpine backdrop, visitors can enjoy a wealth of shopping and dining options all served with welcoming Austrian hospitality. The resort attracts visitors from all over Europe, and within the streets of St Johann you’ll mingle with equal numbers of both locals and tourists. The ski areas are a short distance from the centre of St Johann but the area is served very efficiently by a bus service and the town has a train station, which means that short trips to Kitzbuhel, Innsbruck and Salzburg are all possible.
Skiing in St Johann – The Slopes St Johann is perched at a height of almost 700m and has a skiable area of 60km. Its’ fairly low elevation is boosted by north and north-west facing slopes together with snow cannons on 50% of the runs, thus ensuring good snow coverage throughout the entire season. It is quite a small ski resort by Austrian standards, but is linked to the 6 other resorts which make up the Schneewinkel ski area by bus. St Johann is really a beginner’s paradise, with lovely wide nursery slopes next to the village and a great ski school. There are 17 lifts, most of which are drag lifts but include one gondola and one cable car, leading to a top elevation of 1700m, and from here 9 red runs provide a good choice of long, mainly tree-lined pistes. With only one black run, a long mogul filled trail, expert skiing here is limited so most advanced skiers who visit with their families tend to try the off-piste terrain, or purchase one of the multi-resort passes. The Schneewinkel Pass extends across the next two valleys and offers an additional 170km, and the famous Kitzbuheler Alpen Pass is available as well. St Johann has an extensive 75km of terrain to tempt cross-country skiers, and is also highly rated by boarders, with a snow park and a half-pipe.
Skiing in St Johann – The Apres-Ski St Johann offers lively yet traditional entertainment without attracting party animals. . The resort is full of life both day and night, with hotspots such as Bunny’s Pub and Max’s Bar being particular favourites when the lifts close. The pedestrian centre is perfect for evening strolls, before deciding on which of the 40 or so restaurants to dine in. You can dance till the early hours at the Club Crowded House or return to one of the cosy hotel bars for a gluhwein, before doing it all again the next day. Non-skiers can try ice-skating, sleigh rides, tobogganing, hiking or the Panoramabad Complex with its’ indoor pool, water slide, sauna and steam room facilities.
