Slovenia Skiing Holidays
The republic of Slovenia is situated in Central Europe, where it is bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia, and has a population of 2 million. Slovenia covers an area of diverse terrain, where it’s possible to ski in the Alps and swim in the Adriatic, and a huge expanse is covered by dense forests, home to wildlife including lynx and bears. The mountainous regions are full of beautiful glacial valleys and majestic peaks, and visitors are rapidly discovering the year-round tourist attractions that the country has to offer. Skiing in Slovenia – The Resorts
All the ski resorts in Slovenia are suitable for families, offering plenty of beginner and intermediate runs, and very competitively priced ski lessons, in a friendly relaxed atmosphere. The major ski resort in Slovenia is Kranjska Gora, sitting on the Italian and Austrian borders, in the gorgeous alpine Zgornjesavska Valley. The host of the Alpine Skiing World Championships, Kranjska Gora is home to some fantastic challenging competitive runs, however the majority of the slopes are gentle and wide, with the 30km of pistes offering something for everyone. Kranjska Gora has invested heavily in its’ snowmaking facilities, and its’ fairly sophisticated après-ski scene adds to its’ appeal. Also in the Julian Alps, in the Triglav National Park, is Bohinj, a resort comprised of a collection of villages spread around a beautiful glacial lake, with two different ski areas at each end of the resort. Both Vogel and Kobla on Mount Vitranc offer mainly intermediate skiing, with Vogel reaching a higher altitude of 1,800m. Lake Bled, a peaceful resort only 35km from the capital city of Ljubljana, also covers skiing at Vogel and Kobla, as well as two much more local areas, Straza, with its’ two small floodlit slopes and Zatrnik, a more extensive ski area with 16km of pistes reaching 1,200m. Cross-country trails are extremely prominent here in Slovenia, especially in and around Kranjska Gora, where there are 40km to explore.
Skiing in Slovenia – The Après-ski
The après-ski scene in the small picturesque resorts of Slovenia is traditional, relaxed and friendly. Much of the entertainment is centred around the hotels in the resorts, with live music and cabarets on offer. Slovenian bars and taverns in the villages serve locally brewed alcohol, including strong beers and a number of interesting wines, all at incredibly cheap prices. The cuisine of Slovenia is a hearty mix of German and Italian, unusual and tasty, with lots of meats, sausages, cheese and bread. Activities to try off the slopes are hiking, ice-skating, curling, horse-riding and horse and carriage rides, and there are many interesting excursions available from most of the resorts.
