Skiing weather & climate

Skiing weather
Skiing weather plays a vital part in the conditions of the slopes, and is a key factor in the success and enjoyment of a weeks' skiing holiday. Skiers can come across a wide variety of weather patterns whilst they are away, with conditions varying dramatically from one resort to the next, and changing rapidly throughout the day. Ideal skiing weather would be regular snowfalls of light fluffy powder snow falling on top of a hard base, accompanied by clear blue skies for optimum visibility, and pleasant sunny days.

Skiing weather - Lots of snowfall and clear blue skies for ideal conditions
Ski resorts obviously need a significant amount of snow, so frequent snowfalls throughout the season are essential, with a good base being one that has accumulated snow gradually and preserves it well, such as on high-altitude north-facing slopes. Many resorts have now invested heavily in artificial snowmaking facilities to supplement the snow when the skiing weather does not cooperate, so skiers are generally treated to great conditions throughout the season. The kind of snow can vary, from light and fluffy to heavy and wet, and is impacted by the atmosphere, the wind, humidity and the air temperature. A dry atmosphere will produce powdery snow, whereas if the skiing weather is warmer and wetter, the snow will be heavier. Snow types include packed powder, which is compressed and great to learn on, and powder which is light and dry and loved by more advanced skiers. Other types of surface include crust, which is soft snow covered by a harder layer, and ice, which is fast and slick, and challenging even for more skilled skiers

Skiing weather - Dress appropriately, be aware of changing conditions and stay safe
The weather in the mountains is notoriously changeable and skiers need to be prepared for any eventuality, so being aware of fluctuating conditions whilst on the slopes is essential, as is listening to the snow and weather reports. Dressing for skiing weather is vital, with layering the best way to keep warm, and proper waterproof clothing and the right equipment is needed by all skiers. Goggles are essential, especially if the skiing weather involves snow or sleet, and help to increase visibility and protect the eyes. Skiing weather also affects the chances for avalanches, and off-piste skiers should familiarise themselves with the dangers and warning signs, and learn proper survival techniques.
