Ski wear - Renting or buying
If you are a just embarking on skiing as a sport you may find the diversity and price range of ski wear available bewildering. A good option if you are a beginner, is to rent the essentials such as boots, skis and snowshoes, by renting you can sample different styles and sizes and see which styles suit you best. Renting ski wear can also be good option while you are deciding if the sport is one which you will be continuing with or not. Rather like changing fashions, new makes and models of ski wear are brought out each year, if you hit the ski stores before this year's styles come out, you will be able to pick up huge discounts on almost all ski wear and ski equipment.

Ski wear - basic layering
Layering clothing is essential in all snow sports. Dressing in layers will keep you warm on a cold day but will also make it easier if you need to remove a layer or two when you heat up through exertion, or if they day becomes warmer. A breathable underlayer will keep warmth in but also direct perspiration away from the body, ski wear made from man made fabrics are superior to cotton. Next will come the mid layer; the insulating layer should consist of a thin sweater, lightweight shirt or sweatshirt. On top of the mid-layer you can add a fleece if the weather is particularly cold but this is not a necessity. The top layer of ski wear is the parka or ski jacket; opt for a jacket with low profile synthetic insulators rather than a heavy or bulky down jacket.  Ski pants can be bought that match the jacket, or if not, are made from the same material; either insulated or shell style.

Ski wear - Goggles and helmets
Goggles are an essential ski wear item, they will keep the face warm, cut the glare and protect the eyes from snow spray. Goggles are also essential in order for the skier to perceive variations in the contours of the snow-surface. Make sure goggles have double-lens and adequate ventilation that will prevent fogging. Helmets are optional pieces of skiwear, although not absolutely necessary, beginners should wear them and they can be rented from all ski resorts.
