Selva Gardena Skiing Holidays
Selva Gardena, in the region of Southern Tyrol, is one of the most popular ski areas the beautiful Italian Dolomites. Selva is the best known of the three villages which make up Val Gardena, the others being Ortisei and Santa Cristina, and holds the title of one of the Leading Mountain Resorts in the World, situated at the foot of the Sella Massif. The skiing here in Selva is highly rated – the resort is connected to the Sella Ronda, and amazing 24 km circuit that can be skied in both directions, and Val Gardena is part of the Dolomiti Superski area and famous for hosting the annual World Cup Downhill Races.
Skiing in Selva Gardena – The Slopes
Selva is located at a height of 1,563m and positioned at the east end of the Gardena Valley. The area consists of 175km of skiable terrain, with 52 easy, 105 intermediate and 18 difficult runs, all served by 82 lifts. The skiing here mainly caters for intermediates, but being part of the largest ski pass system, the Dolomiti Superski, with its’ 1,220km of terrain served by 450 lifts, there’s something for every level of skier. The Alpe di Siusi above Orisei provides the best environment for beginners, whilst adventurous skiers in Selva Gardena can test out the more challenging trails in the Santa Cristina area, where the world class downhill runs are located. The Sella Ronde, the circuit around the Sella Massif consisting of Selva itself, Corvora, Arabba and Canazei positioned at each corner of a huge square, is a huge draw, and the clear, easy to follow green and orange signs direct skiers either clockwise or anti-clockwise. It’s possible to spend the whole day exploring the circuit and the eight different ski areas it comprises. A recently added underground railway system now provides a link between all the resorts in Val Gardena. Selva is also a major centre for snowboarders, with a terrain park, and regularly hosts competitions.
Skiing in Selva Gardena - The Après-ski
Selva Gardena is a cosmopolitan Italian ski resort, attracting those who are looking for lively bars and nightclubs, set in a fun party-style atmosphere. Selva is closest to the slopes and has the best choice of après-ski entertainment, and Ortisei is the largest village, with a pedestrian centre full of local shops, many specialising in the famous woodcarvings found in this area. There is a distinct Austrian influence here, with the locals speaking their own dialect, Ladin, and the cuisine is a wonderful hearty blend of Italian and German, including pastas, and meat dishes using lots of ham and cheese. Other activities to try whilst skiing in Selva include ice-skating, ice-climbing, paragliding, swimming and snowshoeing.
