Sauze D’Oulx is one of the main resorts that make up the Milky Way, the expansive ski area bordering France and Italy. The Milky Way offers visitors extensive skiing – 400km of pistes, incorporating 140 slopes and served by 93 lifts and covers Sestriere, Claviere, Cesana, Sansicario, Montgeneve and Sauze D’Oulx itself. Of these, Sauze D’Oulx is one of the most well known resorts – a charming medieval town, with a cheerful, friendly atmosphere, offering excellent intermediate level skiing at competitive prices, topped off with a very lively après-ski scene. During the 2006 Turin Winter Olympic Games, Sauze D’Oulx will play host to the Freestyle Championships.

Skiing in Sauze D’Oulx – The Slopes
At an altitude of 1500m, with its’ 41 lifts reaching a top elevation of 2823m, Sauze D’Oulx is a great place for cruising intermediates, attracting groups and especially young party-loving skiers. Almost three-quarters of the 40 slopes are reds, and there are some very attractive tree-lined trails. The lifts are a short walk from town and everyone ascends up to Sportina, the central hub of Sauze D’Oulx, from which beginners can find some easy trails to start off with and then progress to the wealth of reds. From here, skiers can choose the chairlift over to Sestriere, Sauze D’Oulxs’ higher neighbour, at a snow sure altitude of 2000m. Advanced skiers should seek out the great off-piste terrain leading down from the peaks of Mount Fraiteve and Mount Moncrons, with descents of up to 1600m, or try exploring Montgeneve, still on the Milky Way pass but a short trip away in France. Despite the lack of a snow park, boarders flock to Sauze D’Oulx, as much to try riding the varied terrain as to sample the après-ski. The major investment in snowmaking equipment helps to ensure good snow coverage at this altitude, especially those slopes at the lower level, which have a tendency to melt slightly.

Skiing in Sauze D’Oulx – The Après-ski
Sauze D’Oulx is mostly popular with young skiers, who come to discover this resort through the bars and clubs. The town centre is bustling and the mountain huts start filling up as the skiing comes to an end. Venues such as the New Scotch Bar, The Cotton Club and Scatto Matto offer entertainment well into the night, although for those just looking for a good Italian meal and a quick drink, Sauze D’Oulx will not disappoint. Other things to do in Sauze D’Oulx include ice-skating, bowling, snooker and a cinema.
