Santa Caterina Skiing Holidays
Santa Caterina, in the Valfurva Valley just above Bormio, is a secluded village offering skiing for all levels and modern facilities. The resort sits in the protected Stelvio National Park, a popular year round tourist attraction, and an area of spectacular beauty. Santa Caterina has grown steadily since the first lifts were introduced in the 1960’s, and the resort has developed into a key racing resort, famous for producing some national ski champions.

Skiing in Santa Caterina – The Mountains
Santa Caterina is located at a height of 1,700m, and, with a top elevation of 2,775m and north-facing slopes, the resorts’ snow record is excellent. There are 11 runs, spread over an area of 40km, divided into 4 beginners, 5 intermediate and 2 blacks. A system of 10 lifts serve the resort, including a modern 8-person gondola ascending for more than 1,000m up to the peak, Sobretta at 2,775m. From here, skiers can try out the Deborah Compagnoni racing slope, introduced for the World Championships in 2005, and named after the home-grown local ski champion. Intermediate skiers will enjoy the long red runs, and the scenic trails through the trees, whilst beginners have an enclosed area for the nursery slopes and a good ski school. Santa Caterina is a major cross-country ski centre and often hosts international competitions, with the village being home to both a competitive and recreational track. The ski resort of Santa Caterina is part of the Alta Valtellina region, an area consisting of seven resorts, including the much livelier Livigno and Bormio, and a lift pass is also available offering a days’ skiing in neighbouring St. Moritz, just across the Swiss border.

Skiing in Santa Caterina – The Village
The village of Santa Caterina is situated in an area of outstanding beauty, and the surrounding areas of scenic forests only add to the secluded resorts’ appeal. Santa Caterina has managed to retain its’ traditional charm, whilst offering skiers comfort and convenience, making it a perfect choice for families, couples and those looking a peaceful relaxing base. The après-ski is limited, with Santa Caterina being home to 7 restaurants, offering authentic Italian and French cuisine, and a sprinkling of hotel bars and shops. The local tourist board hosts various events, including a weekly torchlit descent and a moonlit snow-shoe walk. There is a natural ice-rink and a childrens’ mini-club in the village, and hiking and mountain biking are popular off the slope activities.
