Saas Fee Skiing Holidays Saas Fee, a gem of a ski resort in the southern Valais region of the Swiss Alps, offers year round skiing on its’ impressively high slopes, a delightful pedestrian village and a highly efficient modern lift system. At a resort height of 1,800m, Saas Fee sits at the foot of the highest mountain in Switzerland, the Dom, which scales a massive 4,500m, and the resort is surrounded by numerous mountains peaks reaching 4,000m, creating some of the most stunning scenery in the Alps. A quiet and traditional Swiss ski resort, Saas Fee attracts serious skiers, with more than three-quarters of the terrain suited to intermediates and experts.
Skiing in Saas Fee – The Mountains The snow conditions in Saas Fee are among the best in the Alps, with early snow that remains packed throughout the season, which runs as long as into June. Saas Fee can get very cold and windy because of its’ altitude, but most skiers find that a small price to pay for the favourable skiing. Saas Fee offers 100km of snow sure slopes, served by 18 smooth and efficient lifts, including the first underground funicular to be built, the Metro Alpin. Although beginners only have a quarter of the total runs to practice on, Saas Fee is a great resort to learn in as the lower nursery slopes of the village always have decent snow, even in the spring, and are always immaculately groomed. The north facing slopes of Saas Fee have 3 main ski areas, the Felskinn, Plattjen and the Langfluh and consist of both wide open bowls dotted with moguls and long smooth speedy trails. A brand new gondola takes skiers up to Plattjen, at 2,500m and from here some winding blues and cruising reds leads back to the village, taking in a 750m vertical drop. The Felskinn area is served by the Alpine Express Gondolas, whisking skiers up to 3,000m and arriving at a very popular ski area with plenty of interesting trails, and then the Metro Alpin underground carries those wishing to ski on the year-round glacial slopes of the Mittelallalin up a further 500m. From here the views are just spectacular and a trip to the highest revolving restaurant in the world is a must. Guides are available to those looking for off-piste adventures and Saas Fee is also home to a snowboarding park on the glacier, offering both half and quarter pipes, and various rails and jumps.
Skiing in Saas Fee – The Après-ski The car-free streets of Saas Fee give this traditional Swiss mountain town a calm unhurried atmosphere. Quaint authentic chalet-style hotels, bars and restaurants offer a fairly serene après-ski scene, with Saas Fee being home to a few surprisingly lively places including 10 bars and 4 clubs. The restaurants of Saas Fee offer both hearty traditional fare with lots of smoked meats and potatoes, and other regional cuisine such as Chinese and French. Prices here in Saas Fee are fairly steep, though nothing like those of its’ glitzier neighbours, with the shops offering plenty of well-made quality Swiss products. Other non-skiing activities in Saas Fee include hiking, mountaineering, curling, tobogganing and natural ice-skating.
