Portes Du Soleil Skiing The Portes du Soleil or ‘gates of the sun’ is an amazing ski area covering 650kms, two countries – France and Switzerland and more than a dozen ski villages all linked by an efficient lift and bus system. The majority of the skiing takes place above 1600m so although some of the resorts are not considered high altitude the skiing is some of the best in Europe and because the Portes du Soleil is on the Western edge of the Alps it has a fantastic snowfall record.
The ski resorts of the Portes du Soleil The four most popular ski resorts of the Portes du Soleil are Avoriaz, Morzine, Chatel and Les Gets. Avoriaz is a modern purpose built ski resort; the other three are old farming or mining villages. They are all small to mid sized resorts with their own ski area and the exciting possibility to link up with the rest of the Portes du Soleil, there are circuits across the region for every level of skier that take approx 2 ½ hours to complete. It is possible to ski in six different villages, in two countries in one day without ever skiing the same run twice.
Skiing holidays in Portes du Soleil The four major ski resorts of the Portes du Soleil have their own ski school and beginner’s area, the Portes du Soleil is an excellent destination for first time skiers. The Portes du Soleil ski area is particularly popular with families and is suitable for skiers of every ability, intermediates will find so much choice here all linked by an efficient lift and bus system. Advanced skiers will find over 20 black runs including ‘The Wall’ in Avoriaz - a 300m sheer drop of enormous moguls, there is the World Cup downhill run at Les Hauts Forts and vast areas of off piste to explore. Cross country skiers will find approx 95 kms of trails in the Portes du Soleil.
Snowboarding in Portes du Soleil There are so many choices for snowboarders in the Portes du Soleil including 7 snowparks, 3 halfpipes, 4 boarder cross and miles of freeride. Morzine and Avoriaz have excellent facilities for snowboarders from beginners up to experts.Although the resorts of the Portes du Soleil are not large they all have a fairly lively après ski, the food in this area is great and generally very good value for money. There is a varied choice of bars open late into the night. This really is an area for winter sports enthusiasts, some of the activities on offer are bobsleigh, ice climbing, night skiing, mountain biking in snow, ice skating, snow shoeing, snow kiting etc.
