Poiana-Brasov is situated deep in the pine covered forests of the Carpathian Mountains, in the Transylvanian region of Romania. This purpose-built village was established in the1950’s and now has developed into one of Romanias’ best-loved and well-developed resorts, attracting visitors from all over Europe. The region is filled with fascinating folklore, providing ample opportunities for day trips to explore the rich culture and history that Romania has to offer. The skiing in Poiana-Brasov mainly caters for beginners, and the resort offers excellent facilities at extremely reasonable prices.

Skiing In Poiana-Brasov - The Slopes
The north-west facing slopes of Poiana-Brasov have good snow coverage from December to March, with the cold winter temperatures maintaining the base. Skiers will enjoy mainly wooded terrain, consisting of fairly wide slopes, with the lifts accessing the highest peak of Postavarul at 1,800m. This lift system is fairly extensive considering the size of the resort, consisting of 3 cable-cars, 1 gondola and 8 drag-lifts and transports 7,000 skiers an hour around the slopes. The resort has 14 marked trails, including an Olympic run, and various slalom runs. The nursery slopes of Poiana-Brasov are located at the village level, and these slopes are floodlit and house 2 snow cannons. Beginners can take the gondola to reach additional wide easy slopes, and can enjoy the scenic views from the top whilst practicing. The ski-school at Poiana-Brasov has an excellent reputation, with 120 top instructors providing effective and encouraging tuition in English, French and German. Intermediate skiers can choose from 3 red runs in the resort, and can pick up some speed on the long blue run leading back down to the village. With only 2 black runs, the skiing at Poiana-Brasov is fairly limited for advanced skiers, but there are some challenges here, including the Lupului, with its’ 800m drop over the 3km trail.
Skiing In Poiana-Brasov – The Après-ski
The après-ski at Poiana-Brasov is centred mainly around the hotels and bars of the resort, which offer regular folk evenings and gypsy dancing, with eating and drinking here being excellent value for money. Poiana-Brasov is home to many restaurants offering hearty Romanian cuisine in a traditional setting, including Coliba Haiducilor, one of the best gourmet restaurants in the country, and Sura Dacilor, offering a themed night for an unforgettable experience, with traditionally dressed waiters serving old-style Romanian fare by a camp fire. Brasov, the town only 12km away, has lots to see in its’ medieval streets and is home to more lively nightlife, and, of course, no trip to Transylvania would be complete without a trip to Draculas’ home, Bran Castle, where the brave can even spend the night. Poiana-Brasov is a year-round resort, considered by many to be a health retreat, due to the mountains’ pure oxidized air and low air pressure, so visitors here are sure to return invigorated and refreshed.
