Passo Tonale Skiing Holidays
Passo Tonale, located in the Val di Sole in the Italian Alps, is a purpose built ski resort, and one of the highest in Italy. Its’ altitude and close proximity to the Presena Glacier ensures good snow conditions and a long ski season, from as early as October through to May. A favourite with school trips, Passo Tonale is a fairly inexpensive resort, offering a great selection of beginner and intermediate terrain, sunny slopes, wonderful views and highly regarded ski schools.
Skiing in Passo Tonale – The Mountains
Situated at 1,880m, Passo Tonale offers snow-sure slopes, which are generally wide, south-facing and therefore wonderfully sunny, and situated above the tree-line. There is an extensive amount of snowmaking facilities covering the majority of the slopes, maintaining the snow coverage. Passo Tonale has 87km of marked trails, with 11 easy, 15 intermediate and 5 difficult runs. Beginners have the use of 6 lifts at the village level, and wide sunny nursery slopes to practice on. Intermediates have over half of the runs to explore, and a series of 30 lifts carry skiers around the slopes and up to the highest peak at 3,290m up at Monte Venezia. There is a wide selection of varied blues and reds, with most of the runs lead directly back into the village. More advanced terrain can be found on the north side of the valley, and experts should try the Paradiso run, with a vertical drop of 700m over 2km, or the exhilarating off-piste Pisgana, one of the worlds’ most challenging, a 14km trail dropping 2,000m. The high-altitude slopes of the Presena Glacier, offering summer skiing, are also suited to experts, and accessed by gondola from Passo Tonale. The neigbouring traditional town of Ponte de Legno has a separate ski area full of easy trails, and is linked to Passo Tonale by chair lift. The resort is a good choice for snowboarders, with plenty of wide trails particularly suiting beginners.
Skiing in Passo Tonale – The Village
Passo Tonale is a friendly relaxed resort, and a popular choice with families, with most of the accommodation being conveniently located close to the lifts. Prices are very reasonable and there some good restaurants both in the village and on the mountain. Passo Tonale is home to some lively bars, including the Umbrella Bar, Nico’s, and Baita Faita, with a couple of discos staying open into the early hours. Activities off the slopes are fairly limited but include ice-skating and swimming, and there are some picturesque small towns and hamlets around the resort to visit, with charming village centres and churches.
