Skiing in Obertauern
Obertauern is situated on the Tauern pass in the Salzburg province, and despite being fairly small by Austrian standards, and not the prettiest village in the area, remains one of the top resorts in the country - its’ draw being its’ fantastic, plentiful snow. The high elevation of this purpose built resort, 1740m, together with some state of the art snowmaking equipment, means a tremendous snow record and one of the longest seasons in Europe, stretching from November to May. Obertauern can offer something for everyone – a buzzing social scene for singles and fun lovers, a cosy romantic setting for couples, great facilities for families and most importantly, ski slopes for every level of skier.

Skiing in Obertauern – The Slopes
Obertauern has 120km of extremely well groomed pistes, reaching a top elevation of 2313m, all served by 26 lifts. The village is situated at the centre of a snow bowl, and the layout of the slopes allow for skiing in either direction around the perimeter of the bowl. There are a series of colour coded circuits you can follow, a great bonus for beginners for example, who can navigate the entire way round the bowl purely taking easy green runs. The nursery slopes are conveniently found right next to the village, and when ready to progress further, there are 22 easy runs waiting once at the top of the mountain. Then there are 22 slopes ideally suited to intermediates – steeper, narrower and generally more challenging. For more extensive intermediate level skiing, take the gondola up to Altenmarkt or cross over to Schladming. Obertauern has only 6 expert trails, but they do include a slalom course and thrilling moguls and jumps, and there are plenty of guides available to show you some exhilarating off-piste action. The Top-Tauern Pass is available from Obertauern, covering an amazing 700km of terrain with 300 lifts within 30 different regions including Dachstein, Sportwelt Amade and the Lungau region. Obertauern offers night skiing, available until midnight and accessed with your daytime lift pass.

Skiing in Obertauern – The Apres-ski
Apres-ski in Obertauern is fairly classic, and is the largest and liveliest in the area. As you’d expect there are many bustling drinking holes, many being slope side, with beer and schnapps to be found in abundance, favourites being Gastofs’ Tavern and the Lurzeralm. For dining options, there is a varied choice available from the 32 restaurants, and the shopping in Obertauern is equally as diverse, ranging from touristy souvenir shops to upscale boutiques and jewellery stores. For the non-skiers or those wanting a day off, choose from multiple ice-skating rinks, tobogganing, outdoor and indoor pools, various recreational facilities in the brand new sports centre, hiking, snowshoeing and even paragliding.
