Obergurgl Snow Conditions
One of Austria’s' highest genuine villages, skiing in Obergurgl is known for its snow sure slopes and excellent snow record. Sitting at 1,930m and offering skiing up to 3,000m, the resort enjoys an extremely long ski season, running from November to May, with guaranteed conditions. As well as its abundance of snow, Obergurgl also boasts un-crowded slopes and spectacular scenery.
Snow Conditions in Obergurgl - Excellent snow record, very long ski season
With its excellent snow record, Obergurgl is a popular choice for those looking for guaranteed conditions throughout the season, and is often considered for a late spring ski holiday. The resorts' high-altitude slopes often see fresh snow covering the hard packed base in April and May, creating ideal conditions accompanied by sunny blue skies. The quality of snow is excellent and Obergurgl is known as a good resort for beginners and lower intermediates, with many wide easy runs, some as high as 3,000m, lifts departing from village level and trails leading directly back down into the town. Most of the skiing is above tree-level, meaning that the terrain is fairly bleak and open, and, with excellent powder, steep trails and extensive moguls, the slopes have challenges for the more advanced skier, as well as plenty of off-piste.
Obergurgl Snow Conditions - Guaranteed snow, plus extensive snowmaking
The resorts’ slopes are mainly north-facing, with some north-westerly and eastern, which, along with altitude, help to preserve the snow base. Obergurgl has seen depths of up to 250cm in past years on its top slopes, with 2006 seeing a maximum upper slope average of almost 200cm in March, and the top slopes in 2005 reaching a maximum of 130cm. The resort is well-equipped with snowmaking facilities, with 90% of the slopes in Obergurgl covered with snow cannons.
