The village has a typical rural charm and an authentic Tyrolean character, home to traditional chalets and an 18th-century church, St Margaretha, at its centre.
Dining is mainly traditional in Oberau, with inns and guesthouses serving authentic Tyrolean cuisine, and visitors also able to choose from 30 restaurants located throughout the whole valley.
Evening entertainment ranges from drinks in the local bars and inns, to fondue parties and moonlight sleigh rides, and nights at the village's two nightclubs. Niederau, just 3km away, offers a livelier scene.
Day trips to Kitzbuhel are available by train, with the nearby cities of Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich accessible for a real change of scene.
