Skiing in Meribel – The Mountains
Meribel is divided into 2 areas – Meribel 1450 and Meribel Mottaret, at a higher altitude of 1800m. Meribel 1450 is the main centre housing most of the facilities, with a lift base at La Chaudanne, whilst Motteret is a smaller, quieter area, with plenty of ski-in/ski-out accommodation and the main lift hub. Together they combine to create a vast resort, with 150km of pistes, incorporating 22 greens, 35 blues, 22 reds and 10 black runs. Meribel Valley runs from north to south, meaning skiers can make the most of optimum conditions and follow the sun all day. The lift system in Meribel contains 16 high-speed gondolas, more than any other resort in the world, and these, together with a further 33 lifts, transport skiers extremely quickly and efficiently around the resort, resulting in little or no waiting time. Beginners in Meribel have a good choice of nursery slopes, especially around the Altiport at 1700m, whilst intermediate skiers have most of the terrain to explore, with good blues and reds accessible from most of the lifts. The highest lift leads up to the peak at 3,220m, and the most challenging terrain is found up here, with some exhilarating trails running down from the top of Mont Vallon and Mont de la Chambre. The opportunities for off-piste skiing in Meribel are fantastic, especially around Mont de la Chambre, Les Plattiers and Roc de Fer. The resort is home to 2 snowparks, one in Meribel and the other higher up in Mottaret, with ample facilities for boarders. Whilst skiing in Meribel, access to the rest of the Trois Vallees, with its’ 600km of terrain, is excellent, with skiers travelling by gondola to the east, towards Courcheval and La Tania, or west, towards Les Menuires, St Martin-de-Belleville and Val Thorens.
Skiing in Meribel – The Après-ski
The resort of Meribel was designed to retain the traditional architecture of the region, so there is a strong village feel to the area, with its’ chalets constructed of slate and stone, and the local market and authentic bistros and cafes adding to the villages’ charm. Meribel is a chic cosmopolitan village, offering a huge selection of shops, bars and restaurants within its’ lively streets and attracts a loyal clientele to its’ wide range of hotels and chalets. At night, a total of 30 bars and 4 nightclubs cater to the party set, with such favourites as Dick’s Tea Bar and The Loft packing in the crowds. Whilst skiing in Meribel, there are a huge number of other activities to try, including snow-shoeing, ice-climbing, snow-mobiling, tubing, bowling, swimming and visiting the spas, fitness centre or cinema.
