Snow Conditions In Lake Tahoe - Excellent snow record, pleasant dry climate
Ski holidays in Lake Tahoe will take advantage of an excellent snow record with a pleasant dry climate. The weather in the Sierra Mountains is very unpredictable, however, and snowfall has been recorded during every month of the year. During the winter, the ski resorts of Lake Tahoe see huge amounts of snow due to the effects of powerful storms from the Pacific Ocean. These storms are carried north via the jet stream, where they cool before heading south. When the two weather systems meet with the Sierra Nevada Mountains they cool, and the moisture condenses to produce the vast amount of snow - over 1,270cm - that Lake Tahoe sees each year. Located on the eastern side of the mountains, Lake Tahoe is actually sheltered from the heaviest rain and snow that falls on the western side. Despite the abundance of snow, the lake has never been known to freeze over, even during the coldest winters.
