Lake Tahoe Ski Holidays
Skiing In Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe is one of the major ski areas in the US, offering a huge amount of diverse terrain with something for everyone. The Sierra Mountains provide the most stunning backdrop for the beautiful Lake Tahoe which straddles both California and Nevada, and the views throughout this entire area are some of the most spectacular in the world. Lake Tahoe in California is blessed with an average of 300 sunny days a year, and is famous for the huge amounts of snow that the mountains receive.
Lake Tahoe Skiing – The Mountains
Lake Tahoe is divided into two distinct areas, North and South, with the South Shore offering over 10,000 acres of terrain and attracting those in search of a lively bustling ski holiday with plenty of action off the slopes. Perhaps the most famous ski resort in South Tahoe is Heavenly, boasting the highest elevation, at 3,050m, and the West Coasts’ biggest vertical at 1066m, with the skiing most suited to experts. Slightly further south are the more down-to-earth resorts of Sierra-At-Tahoe, with its’ excellent tree-skiing and backcountry terrain and Kirkwood, whose base elevation at 2,200m is the highest in all of Northern California, and receives a mammoth 529”of snowfall a year. The North Shore of Lake Tahoe is a much quieter and less developed area, and a favourite with those whose number one priority is the skiing. There are twelve resorts within the North Shore, the most popular being the world class Squaw Valley USA, the newly developed Olympic resort of 1960, with 4,000 acres of unique terrain – no named trails just wide snow fields and open bowls. Squaw Valley USA is considered to be the birthplace of extreme skiing with its’ steep slopes, narrow chutes and extensive off-piste spread across six peaks of the Sierra Mountains. Alpine Meadows has similar terrain, is considered a great intermediates’ playground and is home to some fantastic snowboarding facilities, including the only superpipe in California. Northstar-At-Tahoe is a family-friendly destination, with plenty of tree-skiing, and Sugarbowl, a popular weekend spot, is a good solid ski resort without any frills, providing excellent skiing for all abilities, in the oldest resort in Lake Tahoe.
Skiing In Lake Tahoe - The Après-ski
The South Shores of Lake Tahoe are the liveliest and vibrant, offering non-stop entertainment around the clock. The Alpine-style village of Heavenly is loud and brash, with plenty of places for drinking when the lifts close, and a huge selection places to eat, including the famous great-value casino buffets of Nevada. Both Heavenly and the new European style pedestrian village of Squaw Valley offer upscale dining alongside traditional American fare. The casinos offer nightly entertainment, and throughout the area friendly local bars have happy hours, live music and pool.
