Skiing in La Daille
Val d’Isere, the hugely popular resort in the French Alps, is a mecca for both serious skiers who love to explore off-piste terrain and those who love to play just as hard at night. Together with Tignes, the resort makes up the massive Espace Killy, with a network covering 300km, and with 2 glaciers in the region and a top elevation of 3,300m, the area is always guaranteed to have exceptional snow coverage. The resort of Val d’Isere, an old farming community, is comprised of 3 villages – Val d’Isere, Le Fornet and La Daille. Much of the accommodation in Val d’Isere is found in the village of La Daille, the first to be found along the valley, which has undergone extensive development since the 1950’s and is home to some huge outdated accommodation complexes.
Skiing in La Daille – The Mountains
The village of La Daille in Val d’Isere is ideally situated for access to the slopes and some great skiing for both beginners and intermediates. Choose from an underground funicular, the Funival, or the huge 30 person gondola, both of which leave from the village and take skiers to the Bellevarde sector, where there is a great choice for all levels of skier. Beginners can ski all the way back to the village on some manageable runs, whilst intermediates can try a more challenging route back down to La Daille with some characteristic verticals, or head off towards Tignes ski resort. Experts skiing in Val d’Isere will especially enjoy the off-piste here in the Bellevarde sector, of which there is plenty, or the infamous downhill on the Bellevarde Face, said to be the hardest in the world. At the other side of Val d’Isere, a cable-car whisks skiers up to Le Fornet, an area known for its’ fantastic off-piste powder and giving access to the slopes of the Pissaillas Glacier. Many of the most interesting runs end up here in the village of La Daille, and the area is also a prime spot for watching the World Cup downhill races. La Daille is home to a huge new snowboard park, which includes a boardercross course, jumps, rails and a 200m half-pipe. In Val d’Isere, the sheer size of the ski area and the quality of the snow means that everyone will be happy, with intermediates and experts being particularly spoilt for choice here.
Skiing in La Daille – Off the slopes
Le Daille in Val d’Isere still bears traces of its’ farming roots, with some traditional chalets still present, but in general has the appearance of a purpose-built resort. The accommodation in La Daille tends to be a little cheaper than that found in the main village, as it is 3km away, and there are some traditional Savoyard restaurants here serving hearty local food in cosy rustic settings. Le Train Rouge, the free bus service, runs regularly until midnight and from La Daille it is an easy trip to the heart of the nightlife in Val d’Isere, with its’ huge choice of clubs and bars, and extensive shopping opportunities. Most of the action centres around the slopes, but skating, swimming, bowling and an indoor fitness centre are available in Val d’Isere.
