Kaprun Snow Conditions

Kaprun lies in the Austrian Alps, just 98km from Salzburg, and is situated at the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Thanks to its location, Kaprun sees excellent snow coverage all season long, and together with Zell am See, makes up part of the Europa Sport ski area, offering mainly beginners skiing and intermediate skiing. Kaprun has access to the slopes of the glacier all year round, however the main season runs from the end of November until late-April. A very snow-sure ski resort, Kaprun sees an average annual snowfall of 1m on its slopes.  

 

Part of the Europa Sport ski area, Kaprun has access to 130km of terrain over three main ski areas - the local slopes at Maiskogel, the terrain at Zell am See and the glacier - and is known for high-altitude slopes with a top elevation over 2,500m. The slopes face north and south, meaning good snow coverage throughout the season, as well as plenty of sunshine. The local ski area at Maiskogel is located at an altitude of 1,675m, and the Lechnerberg behind the village has good nursery slopes for beginners. Access to the higher slopes of the Kitzsteinhorn is by bus and gondola, and at the Schmittenhohe, at 2,000m, there's excellent terrain for more advanced skiing, with wide open pistes and some serious moguls. The Kitzsteinhorn Glacier reaches a top elevation of 3,023m, with well-groomed wide open bowls, as well as steep ravines and bumps, and is open for summer skiing holidays.

 

Despite being a high-altitude snow-sure resort, there is extensive snowmaking on Kaprun's slopes, with 200 snow cannons covering 40km of pistes. Upper slope averages for Kaprun reached 173cm in the 2009 - 2010 season, and a whopping 378cm during the previous 2008 - 2009 season, with the best snow historically seen during March and April.
