Geilo Snow Conditions - Snowsure resort in southern Norway
Geilo lies in the Hallingdal Valley in southern Norway, approximately 250km from Oslo and 260km from Bergen, a 3-hour transfer from each. The resort sits on the edge of the Hardangervida Plateau, the biggest in Europe. Geilo is located at an elevation of 800m, and offers skiing up to almost 1,200m, with 32km of piste, and 220km of cross-country skiing trails. The resort is known to be snowsure due to its high latitude, and receives between 1.5 - 2.5m of snowfall each year.
Snow Conditions In Geilo - Long cold winter ensures good ski season
The cold Scandinavian winter ensures a long ski season in Geilo, running from November to April. Plenty of snow is guaranteed throughout these months, making the resort a good choice for a late ski holiday. Weather can be changeable here due to systems approaching from the Atlantic, and the days are typically short, with limited hours of sunlight. Geilos' slopes are spread over two mountains on either side of the town, with the skiing linked by shuttle bus. Although the trails are not particularly long, the terrain is varied, ranging from wide easy greens to plenty of steeps. The highest point is Havsdalshovda, at 1,178m, the only area in Geilo above the tree-line.
Geilo Snow Conditions - Good coverage by snowmaking facilities
Geilo has invested heavily in snowmaking facilities, with over half the pistes covered by 220 snow cannons, which helps to guarantee an early start to the season. The runs in the resort are also well-maintained and groomed to a high standard. Upper slope averages for Geilo reached 102cm in 2007, with the resort seeing averages of up to 130cm in recent years.
