Snow Conditions in Espace Killy - Excellent snow record in high-altitude ski area
L'Espace Killy comprises of the world-renowned ski resorts of Tignes and Val d'Isere, and offers an excellent base for a winter holiday high in the Tarentaise Valley. The snow-sure glacial slopes of Espace Killy boast an enviable record, and the well-linked lift system accesses some of the best skiing in the Alps. With a top elevation of 3,450m, the 300km of terrain offers something for everyone, and sees a long ski season running from mid-November to mid-May.
Espace Killy Snow Conditions - Summer skiing on glacial slopes
With the village centre of Val d'Isere at 1,500m and Tignes at 2,100m, skiers in Espace Killy are rewarded with fantastic high-altitude conditions all season long, and an excellent range of varied slopes for all levels. Two glaciers in the area ensure first-rate snow conditions, and with La Grande Motte rising to 3,450m, the area allows for summer skiing holidays too. Espace Killy has a 1,900m vertical drop - one of the largest in the world - and is known for its challenging terrain and exciting off-piste, with Tignes, one of the highest resorts in the Alps, seeing plenty of above tree-line slopes, and Val d'Isere known for its world-class expert terrain with steep moguls and deep powder bowls. There are runs for beginners, too, and a vast network of long blues and reds for intermediate cruisers. Espace Killy has a large number of north-facing slopes, which help to retain the snow well, and the ski area is known for its well-groomed pistes.
Snow Conditions in Espace Killy - Snow-sure region, enhanced with snowmaking
Espace Killy sees an average of 6m of snowfall each year, and to enhance the natural snow, the region also has extensive snowmaking facilities, with 216 snow cannons covering its slopes. Upper slope averages in Val d'Isere during the 2009 - 2010 season reached 198cm in March, with Tignes seeing 200cm. Conditions in Tignes, in particular, are generally excellent, with past seasons having seen the resort experience upper slope averages of up to 280cm.
