Ski Schools
Resort facilities in Ellmau include three highly regarded ski schools, with English-speaking experts on hand to guide beginners through the basics of skiing and/or snowboarding. The ski-schools can also arrange off-piste guiding, ski races, ‘ski safaris’ and children’s parties.
Children
Ski holidays in Ellmau are extremely family-friendly, and the resort offers a wealth of resources and activities for all ages. The three ski schools in Ellmau each offer children’s classes for youngsters upwards of four years, and the resort’s kindergarten and crèche, accept children from six months through to four years old.. Many hotels can also arrange private childcare. Along with very good nursery slopes, the younger members of the family will love the funicular – Austria’s longest – that ferries holidaymakers in Ellmau up to the base of the ski area. Other child-friendly activities include sleigh rides, a 4.5 km toboggan run, and a bowling alley. The KaiserBad Leisure Centre is popular with all ages thanks to its indoor and outdoor pools, and a terrific water slide.
Dining
Hungry skiers in Ellmau can take their pick from more than 30 restaurants in the resort itself, and many more in the wider SkiWelt area. Most of the restaurants belong to the resort’s many excellent hotels, and skiers in Ellmau are spoilt for choice when it comes to sampling traditional Austrian Tirolean cuisine – there’s plenty of opportunity to try the excellent local fondue and strudel. The abundance of restaurants in the resort means that dining in Ellmau tends to be competitively priced, and those looking for an alternative to local cuisine can take their pick from Italian, Chinese and fast food options.
Apres-ski
Family-focussed Ellmau offers less in the way of nightlife than many of the neighbouring resorts, but partiers on a ski holiday in Ellmau will still find plenty of post-slope activity. There are 10 bars within the resort itself, several of which begin to fill up as soon as the lifts close. A handful of nightclubs cater for those who want to party into the early hours, with live music and/or karaoke frequently on the late-night menu.
Town facilities
Skiers in Ellmau will appreciate the fact that almost all day-to-day needs can be met within the picturesque village centre itself. As well as plenty of shops, Ellmau boasts a post office, banks, cashpoints accepting international cards, a hairdressers, sauna and spa, bowling alley, and the KaiserBad Leisure Centre with its pools and waterslides.
Shopping
Shopaholics on a ski holiday in Ellmau have plenty of opportunity to indulge in a spot of retail threrapy. Shopping in Ellmau is aexcellent as the resort offers more shops thatn most of the resorts in the Skiwelt area – there are some 35 retail outlets in the village. As well as stores selling clothing and sportswear, there are several good butchers and bakers, tobacconists, plenty of souvenir stores, and a large supermarket. Ellmau has a larger selection of shops than most of the other Skiwelt resorts, with some 35 outlets to choose from. These include a good selection of ski shops and traditional local food producers including several butchers, bakers and grocers.
The slopes
Ellmau is one of the larger resorts in Skiwelt, which itself is Austria’s largest inter-connected ski area, with 250km of lift-liniked terrain. Skiwelt is further connected to Kitzbühel's skiing by the Ki-West gondola and a short bus ride. Although Ellmau is among Austria’s lowest resorts, a snow-making arsenal of 400 snow cannons ensures good skiing throughout the season. Unfortunately in these days of climate-change concerns, it is also one of the lowest major ski areas in the Alps, but it does boast Austria's largest snowmaking arsenal in a bid to counter this. Beginners and early intermediates skiing in Ellmau will be in their element – there are 108 km of beginner slopes and 120km of intermediate slopes. Experienced skiers in Ellmau are less well off, but can still enjoy 22km of difficult slopes, and some challenging off-piste skiing.
