Skiing in Courchevel 1850
Courchevel, arguably the best resort in the world, is the largest in the Trois Vallees region and boasts fantastic skiing together with top-of-the-range facilities and apres-ski. It offers the most terrain and widest range of skiing in the Trois Vallees with excellent links to Meribel, Val Thorens and Les Menuires. Courchevel is divided into 4 separate areas, each catering to different tastes and named for its’ altitude, Courchevel 1300, 1550, 1650 and the most well-known, 1850. Courchevel 1850 prides itself on its’ upscale image and is a perennial favourite with royalty, celebrities and the rich and famous.
Skiing in Courchevel 1850 – The Mountains
With 150 km of pistes, Courchevel offers 102 trails served by a series of 67 lifts. The north facing slopes retain great snow coverage and are impeccably groomed. The highest village in Courchevel, 1850 has an impressive lift system accessing both sides of the valley from the hub, La Croisette, and is home to the worlds’ largest cablecar, taking skiers up to Saulire at 2,738m. Courchevel 1850 is a great place for beginners, being home to 7 of the resorts’ 12 free lifts, and having plenty of wide greens and easy blues in the Altiport section. There are some excellent ski schools found throughout Courchevel, including the Supreme Ski School, founded and run by British instructors, and an ESF school at 1850.
The resort is said to be the best in the world for intermediate skiers, with a huge amount of runs in the Trois Vallees to choose from, and 47 blues and 38 reds in the Courchevel valley alone. Some wonderful cruising trails run down from the peak of 1850, notably in the Chanrossa and Roc Merlot areas, and there are some scenic wooded runs down towards Meribel. Experts in Courchevel 1850 will find some of the best expert terrain at the peak of La Saulire, from which it is possible to ski all the way back down to the town of Bozel, below the resort, taking in a vertical drop of 2,000m. Courchevel is home to the infamous Ugly Sisters, in Les Suisses, 3 couloirs with amazingly steep narrow paths - a perfect challenge for advanced skiers. For night skiers, a floodlit slope is open daily until 7pm at Courchevel 1650.
Skiing in Courchevel 1850 – The Village
Courchevel 1850 is the most expensive resort in France, with the emphasis on luxury and exclusivity. Many jet-set patrons make use of the private airport in the middle of the slopes, and 1850 generally enjoys an international clientele. The resort revels in its’ upmarket image, being home to private chalets and 4 star hotels, with most accommodation in1850 being ski-in/ski-out. Courchevel 1850 is home to 2 Michelin starred restaurants, as well as a wealth of wonderful patisseries, cafes and bistros. Nightlife is sophisticated with numerous exclusive hotel bars, clubs and discos. Whilst skiing in Courchevel 1850, other activities to enjoy include cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, snow-mobiling, tobogganing, ice-skating and hiking.
