Restaurants There are 8 restaurants up on the mountains in Chamonix, but much more choice in and around the resort itself. Skiers can choose from almost more one hundred eateries, ranging from fast-food places to Michelin-starred establishments, serving a range of international cuisine as well as local Savoyard specialities.
Ski schools Chamonix is known for its excellent ski schools, and is home to around 10 schools and guiding companies, including the two main centres, the ESF and Ski Sensations, which offer various lessons with English-speaking instructors. There is tuition for all levels of skier in Chamonix, from regular group and private lessons, to specialist elite courses that focus on expert skills such as racing and slalom skiing.
Equipment rental The resort has plenty of choice for ski rental, with more than 20 shops on the mountain offering brand new modern equipment for skiers. There are discounts available in some places for families and groups, with all shops accepting credit cards.
Children Chamonix has good facilities for families and children, with plenty of off-the-slope activities, discounted lift tickets, and excellent tuition at the established ski schools. Lessons are available for children as young as 3 years old, and there are a number of nurseries, crèches and day-care centres in the resort (some taking babies as young as 6 months old), and conveniently situated close to the pistes. Babysitting facilities are also available in the resort.
Essentials There are more than 200 shops in the town, including a department store and a few reasonably priced supermarkets for your self-catering needs. The town offers plenty of resort facilities for holidaymakers, with Chamonix being home to 10 banks, 3 post offices, 4 launderettes and more than 10 doctors' practices in the town.
