Chamonix Snow Conditions – Varied terrain and beautiful views
Skiing in Chamonix is an exhilarating experience – the breathtaking views, high altitude and well-groomed powdery slopes attract thousands of repeat visitors every year. With 157kms of on-piste and virtually unlimited off-piste, Chamonix is exceptionally popular and lift system gives year-round access to the high mountain areas around the Mont Blanc, whether for skiing, climbing, hiking, mountain biking or sight-seeing. Chamonix is a favourite haunt of experienced skiers thanks to some seriously challenging black runs and unlimited off-piste activity, but beginners on a ski holiday in Chamonix will find that their needs are catered for too. There are good nursery slopes in and around the town itself, and Chamonix also boasts a number of well-regarded ski schools.
Snow conditions in Chamonix – High altitude skiing
Chamonix town itself sits at an altitude of just over 1,000 metres, but the vast majority of slopes are positioned at above 2,000 metres, making for a good snow record. Expert skiers in Chamonix looking for a high-altitude challenge will be pleased to hear that the highest lift reaches 3, 864 metres. Strong skiers should head for Les Grands-Monets, where they will find extremely steep terrain, moguls and fantastic off-piste opportunities. Care should be taken off-piste, however – avalanches are a possibility and even the most seasoned skiers in Chamonix should venture off piste only under the eye of an experienced guide. At lower altitude and closer to the town itself, beginners and intermediates will find gentler slopes in areas such as Les Houches, La Voraine and Le Savoy.
Chamonix Snow Conditions – A challenge for experienced skiers
Sitting at the foot of the mighty Mont Blanc Mountain, Chamonix benefits from an excellent snow record thanks to a microclimate that result from the proximity of the mountain itself. Although snow conditions are less impressive at lower altitudes, snow cover on the higher slopes is virtually guaranteed from early December until late April. An arsenal of 54 snow cannons helps to ensure snow conditions at lower altitudes remain favourable throughout the season. Chamonix is something of a Mecca for experienced skiers and extreme sports enthusiasts. Experienced skiers in Chamonix can experience one of the world’s greatest runs – the 13-mile descent down the Valle Blanche glacier. Skiing in Chamonix is almost entirely above the ski line, and with both north and south-facing slopes, snow conditions here are hard to beat.
