Snow Conditions in Cervinia
Cervinia enjoys an excellent snow record, the best in the Italian Alps, with its glacial slopes maintaining guaranteed snow throughout the season. The resort boasts a very long ski season running from November to April, and the mountains mainly south-facing slopes are often bathed in sunshine, creating comfortable skiing conditions with warm temperatures. The sun does cause some melting and subsequent freezing, resulting in the possibility of some icy conditions, but generally only late in the season. Runs are generally icier in the morning becoming progressively softer throughout the day.
Cervinia Snow Conditions - Best snow record in Italian Alps
Cervinia sees better snow conditions than its Swiss neighbour, Zermatt. The resort sees an average annual snowfall of 10 meters throughout the season, and also has 20 snow cannons to assist the lower slopes if needed. 2006 saw excellent upper slope averages in March and April of 190cm, with 2005 only seeing a maximum of 140cm. Past records show that the resort has enjoyed fantastic conditions with upper slope averages reaching as high as 266cm in recent years. Lower slopes generally see averages of over 100cm in the peak season, meaning lots of snow for the nursery slopes and ideal conditions for beginners to learn in.
Snow Conditions in Cervinia - Summer skiing possible on glacier
The high-altitude slopes can see some windy conditions, especially at the very top, and most of the trails are above the tree-line. Skiers should always be aware of the risk of avalanches at such altitude, and warnings are posted on the lifts. As well as an impressive winter season, there is summer skiing on Cervinia's glacier, running from mid-June to mid-September.
