Bardonecchia Skiing Holidays The ski resort of Bardonecchia is located in the Susa Valley in the Piedmont region of Italy, and was one of the first Italian ski areas to be established in the mid ‘30’s. Sitting on the French border, Bardonecchia is a bustling market town that has developed into a thriving ski resort, surrounded by scenic pine forests and stunning views of the Italian Alps. It is a resort rich in history and character, popular with Italians, and offers excellent intermediate skiing with a friendly, yet cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Skiing in Bardonecchia – The Mountains Bardonecchia is located at a height of 1,300m, and its’ north facing slopes provide the resort with its’ excellent snow record. There are 140km of marked trails, and the 52 runs, incorporating 10 green runs, 28 blues, 8 reds and 6 blacks, are found over various different ski areas, the main three being Campo Smith, Melezet and Jafferau. Campo Smith is the major area, where the slopes are often very busy, and is lift linked to Melezet. Together they offer convenient local nursery areas and the best slopes for beginners in Bardonecchia, particularly at the lower level. Both areas offer a wide range of terrain, from wide easy trails to narrow wooded runs. Jafferau, where the most challenging skiing is found, is not linked but just a 5 minute bus ride away. Here, skiers can access the highest point in Bardonecchia, 2,750m, and enjoy a mixture of skiing in the wide-open bowl, with some moguls and steep tree-lined trails. Intermediate skiers will have the whole of the resort to explore, with its’ large selection of red and blue runs. For more experienced skiers looking for off-piste in Bardonecchia, plenty can be found around Jafferau, with the help of an experienced guide. For those wishing to venture further afield, the huge areas of the Milky Way and the Three Valleys are easily accessible by car from Bardonecchia. Snowboarders have a wide range of slopes to enjoy, with the resort mainly suiting more experienced boarders, and Bardonecchia is set to play a major role in the 2006 Winter Olympics, playing host to the snowboarding events.
Skiing in Bardonecchia – The Après-ski Bardonecchia is a lively market town, dating back to medieval times, and offers a good mix of traditional charm and modern facilities. The accommodation varies from small pensions and apartments to larger hotels, all offering good value for money, and the resort is home to a selection of shops. Bardonecchia has a fairly relaxed après-ski scene, with 15 restaurants in the resort, mainly offering traditional Italian fare and local wines, and a choice of 10 bars and 3 discos. Whilst skiing in Bardonecchia, other activities to try include ice-skating in the natural rink, horse-back riding, bowling, swimming in both an indoor and outdoor pool and hiking.
