Bansko experiences an Alpine climate, with its proximity to the mountains influencing its cold winter weather. The resort typically experiences long cold winters and generally excellent snow coverage over its 5 month ski season, which runs from December to April. This is the longest season of all the Bulgarian ski resorts, with the town also boasts the best snow record too.

Winter ski holidays in Bansko will see a high level of snowfall - an average of 160 days of snow - creating cover of up to 2m thick, especially on the upper slopes in the resort. With its highest slope at 2,600m, and most of the skiing taking place at around 2,000m (the lowest piste sits at 1,100m) snow conditions are generally excellent. The north-facing slopes in the resort mean that the pistes hold the snow well, and the cold temperatures allow for a great deal of fine powder. Recent investment in snowmaking facilities ensure that good snow conditions are always guaranteed, with the addition of 44 snow cannons on over half the slopes, and 12 grooming machines help to maintain the quality of the pistes. Even during bright sunny days, the upper slopes don't get too icy, but there can be quite windy conditions, especially at the very top of the mountains.

The average winter temperature in Bansko is around 0C, with temperatures in January, the coldest month, dropping as low as -5C. Late March eventually sees temperatures rising to above 0C, with the average April high being 2C. January also sees the highest amount of snowy days per month - 7 - with December and February seeing on average 5 days of snowfall every month.
