Banff boasts a long winter ski season beginning in early November and running until mid-May. The three ski areas vary in height, from 1,630m up to 2,160m, with skiing reaching a top elevation of 2,730m. Sunshine Village is the highest, at an altitude of 2,160m, and is open until late May. The ski area is generally considered to have some of the best snow in the world, and has no snowmaking facilities in the resort, instead relying totally on its abundant natural snowfall, which can be as much as 900cm each year. Lake Louise, however, has the biggest snowmaking system in Canada, which, along with its excellent natural snow record of 360cm, guarantees first-rate conditions all season long. The famous Rocky Mountain champagne powder, found throughout the mountain ranges, creates ideal conditions for off-piste skiing, with heli-sking remaining a popular and thrilling activity.
