Surrounded by thermal hot springs, the spa town of Bad Gastein offers a haven for relaxation after a day on the slopes. As well as hotel and community indoor and outdoor pools, the Felsenbad complex offers a host of steam rooms, saunas and Jacuzzis as well as pools with slides and fountains - great for family ski holidays. The historic town is quite formal and elegant, with the Belle Epoque architecture bringing an air of grandeau, helped by the presence of upscale shops and classy hotels. A natural waterfall cascading through the town is the focal point of the resort. There is a folk museum and mining museum to visit, and a 15th century Gothic church with interesting murals. Salzburg is an easy day trip, and the Swarovski crystal factory is nearby.

The nightlife is lively and quite sophisticated, with the options ranging from locally brewed beers in cosy pubs to cocktails in smart hotel lounges. There are events such as afternoon teas and ballroom dancing which take place in the grand hotels, and after dark there are a selection of clubs and discos as well as a casino offering late-night fun.

From fast food to gourmet cuisine, the food in Bad Gastein is varied with generally high standards. The resort does cater to a range of tastes and budgets, serving Chinese and Mexican food, and there are local cafes for tasty Austrian pastries and coffee.
