Ski holidays in Bad Gastein are located at the head of the Gastein Valley just south of Salzburg. It is the main town in the valley and has enjoyed a long history of tourism, thanks to the 17 thermal hot springs that surround the area, and is now a well-regarded and international ski resort with extensive terrain over 200km and reliable snow conditions. Lying at 1,100m above sea level, the town is built on a steep valley and offers plenty of skiing above 2,000m. Despite its relatively low height, Bad Gastein is known to be a snowsure resort thanks to the surrounding high-altitude slopes which reach 2,700m, and receives an average snowfall of 1,524cm every year.
Snow Conditions In Bad Gastein - Ideal for intermediates and off-piste skiers
The resort is best suited for skiing intermediates looking for lots of challenging runs, and the valley offers 4 separate areas with extensive terrain both above and below the tree-line. Bad Gasteins' ski area has everything from family-friendly wide slopes to deep powder and mogul runs, with a wide variety of long blue and reds, ideal for fast cruising. The highest point in the region is Sportgastein, which lies at the head of the valley at 2,700m and sees the best snow and guaranteed conditions throughout the season. Here, the off-piste conditions are excellent for advanced skiers, with fantastic powder trails leading down the Kreuzkogel Mountain.

The long ski season in Bad Gastein runs from December to May, with February and March generally seeing the best conditions on the slopes. The higher slopes tend to be well covered throughout the winter season, with upper slope averages for 2007 seeing 124cm in March, usually the best month for snowfall. Almost half the pistes in Bad Gastein are covered by snowmaking facilities, which feature 120 snow cannons covering 60 acres. January sees the coldest weather, with an average temperature of -3C, while April and May see pleasant average highs of 9C and 10C.
