Are Snow Conditions - Long ski season, from November to May; snowsure resort
The Swedish resort of Are is located close to the Norwegian border, and remains the country’s' number one ski resort. It sits next to a frozen lake, amidst some spectacular mountain landscapes, and boasts almost 100km of skiable terrain, which stretches for 10km from east to west. Due to the classic Scandinavian climate, the resort boasts a very long ski season, running from November to May, and sees reliable snowfall each year. So much so that Are offers a 'snow warranty', guaranteeing that at least 10 of its slopes will be open during the period from December to May, and if not, skiers will be entitled to a refund (visit www.skistar.com/are for full details).

Snow Conditions In Are - Varied terrain for all levels, in the different villages
Although the resort altitude of 380m is relatively low, the skiing in Are takes place up to 1,274m. Are is comprised of four villages, each with their own ski areas and all linked by bus. Two-thirds of the terrain is below the tree-line, with most of the runs suited to intermediates, however beginners and families will enjoy many easy and gently sloping runs found here. More experienced skiers can find plenty of challenges in Are, from the World Cup run and the bumpy moguls, to the extensive off-piste terrain, best explored with a knowledgeable guide.

Are Snow Conditions - Similar temperatures to Alps, can get windy and less daylight
Temperatures are generally the same as the Alps, thanks to the Gulf Stream which helps to keep them stable, but the resort can see plenty of wind, which sometimes closes the runs at the top of the mountain. There is less daylight here in winter, with the lifts closing at 3.30pm in January, but the slopes are also floodlit for night skiing. Upper slope averages in Are reached 85cm in 2007, with recent years seeing as much as 120cm, and the resort also offers snowmaking facilities, covering 45% of the slopes.
